STEGEMANN FAMILY
ANNIE STEGEMANN Lou’s Great Grandmother
Emil and Rosa’s daughter Annie was born on January 27, 1876, at home at 57 Division St in New York, NY. Annie’s parents were 26 and 27 when she was born.
At 19, Annie married 22-year-old John Henry Zettler (see ZETTLER FAMILY) on September 7, 1895, at the East Baptist Church in Brooklyn, NY.
John’s profession was a shoe-cutter. John died at age 46 on February 20, 1919, of Broncho-Pneumonia in the family flat at 264 Saratoga Avenue in Brooklyn, NY, a victim of the worldwide ‘Spanish Influenza’ epidemic. He had been sick for four days. On the morning of February 20th, he awakened and asked for a glass of water. Before anyone could respond, he fell back dead.
Annie remarried William Duckfield 3 ½ years later on November 1, 1922, in New York City. She died on December 30, 1942, of complications of Parkinson’s Disease in New York, NY. She is buried next to her first husband, John, in the Evergreens Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY.
John and Annie had the following children:

EMIL JOHN STEGEMANN Lou’s Great-Great-Grandfather
Ernest’s son, Emil was born on October 17, 1849, in Eisenach, Germany. 1* He emigrated to the United States, arriving in New York on October 18, 1866. 2* At the age of 23, Emil married 21-year-old Rosale ‘Rosa’ Baumgartner in about 1872, probably in New York, NY. Rosa was born on November 8, 1851, in the Baden state of Germany and her parents were Herman and Susan (Schmidt) Baumgartner. 3* Emil worked as a confectioner, baker, and candy maker for most of his adult life. He became a U.S. citizen on October 17, 1876. The family lived in Manhattan on Division Street for most of the late 1800s, then moved to 355 Marion Street in Brooklyn sometime before 1900. Rosa died of heart failure due to Endocarditis at the age of 66 in Brooklyn, NY on March 8, 1918. Emil then moved to Philadelphia to live with his oldest daughter, Josephine, and her husband. Emil then moved back to the East Richmond Hill neighborhood in Queens, NY to live with his daughter, Freda, and her family. Emil died on March 14, 1929, at the age of 79. Both Rosa and Emil’s burials occurred in the Linden Hill Cemetery, in Brooklyn, NY.
Emil and Rosa had children:
Josephine ‘Jennie’ was born on November 6, 1872, in New York, NY. She married Philip Henry Duckfield on February 8, 1890. Philip is the uncle of William George Duckfield, who was the second husband of Annie (Stegemann) Zettler. Jennie died on May 16, 1961, in New York City.
Male Infant was born on June 24, 1874, in New York, NY. He died as a child.
Annie, see the earlier story.
Freda was born on June 22, 1880, in New York, NY. She married William Frederick Martens on June 16, 1900. They divorced. She then married John Kittle on November 29, 1923, in Melrose Park, PA. Freda died on March 21, 1973, in Hempstead, NY.
Albert was born on June 1, 1882, in New York, NY. He married Jennie Glover on August 28, 1907. He died on August 19, 1965, in Bay Shore, NY.
Charles was born on July 26, 1884, in New York, NY. Family tradition indicated he was mentally slow and that he lived with sister Annie and her second husband William Duckfield in Malverne, Long Island. His death details are unknown.
ERNEST STEGEMANN Lou’s 3 X Great Grandfather
Ernest was listed as Emil’s father on his death certificate, which was completed by Emil’s daughter, Freda. He was likely born in Germany. No further information is known about him.
Emil gives his place of birth as “Eisenach, Germany” on his 1894 passport application. The US and NY census enumerations list his birthplace as “Germany”. Four of his children’s birth certificates list his PoB as either “Germany” or “Baden”. The birth certificate of his youngest child, Charles lists Emil’s PoB as “Eisenach” and Rose’s PoB as “Baden in Germany”. Only two towns named Eisenach are found in Germany: One in the Rheinland-Pfalz state and one in the state of Thuringia. Neither is close to the borders of the state of Baden-Wurttemberg.
Emil gives his date of arrival in New York as October 18, 1866, and his port of departure as Bremen, Germany on his 1894 passport application. Because of a gap in the available ship manifests at both ports during the time of his emigration, no further details about it are available through traditional primary sources for this type of information.
Rosa’s last name is listed as both Baumgartner and Bauer in vital records associated with her children’s birth and her death. Since she was likely the primary source for the children’s birth certificates, the information found there (Baumgartner) should be given more credibility than her death certificate (Bauer), where it appears her husband, Emil was the primary information source. Also, Rosa’s date of birth is listed as March 1851 on the 1900 US Census and November 8, 1848, on her death certificate. Other vital records list her age relative to Emil’s in a range as much as 5 years older to 2 years younger.
